Awesome South African Sporting Events
The city of Cape Town will be buzzing this weekend with The Two Oceans Marathon taking place so what better time to talk about the country’s sporting events.
Sport plays such a significant role in the lives of South Africans. Both as participants and spectators.
At the World Travel Awards in 2011, South Africa was recognised as the Best Sports Tourism Destination worldwide.
This month we also saw the ABSA Cape Epic being held in the province. This grueling mountain bike race is considered the world’s premier mountain bike race – with the largest prize money in the world
The Comrades Marathon – what is also known as “The ultimate human race” has 18000 runners making it both the oldest and the largest ultra-marathon in the world. The race has been run for almost 90 years. Comrades runner Wally Hayward held the record for the up and down runs, the youngest runner (in 1930 at 21 years) and the oldest runner at the age of 80.
The Argus PicknPay Momentum cycle race is the largest individually timed cycle race in the world with 35000 cyclists
The Midmar Mile – largest open water swim in world. The 13 755 finishers secured a place for the Midmar Mile in the Guinness Book of World Records,
Soweto Derby – The Soweto Derby between Chiefs vs Pirates makes for one of the biggest derby matches in the world.
Finally The Two Oceans Marathon – arguably the most beautiful marathon in the world.
We world-wide we certainly stand out when it comes to the colour and creativity fans bring to the stadium.
